About

In this program, we will examine medical practices of the late 18th century. Could you have set a dislocated shoulder, remove a musket ball, or treat typhus? Join us to discover the medical world of the 1770s with historian Anne Clothier.

From herbal remedies to surgical procedures, we will discuss battlefield medical practices in real life and as portrayed by the TV series Outlander. We'll discuss the authenticity of Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Randall Fraser’s practices and learn how ailments and injuries would actually have been treated in the Colonial Era. Recipes for remedies you can try at home will also be shared. The presenter will display items and instruments from her collection of medical antiques.

Anne Clothier grew up immersed in history on her family's 200-year-old farm in Saratoga County. Her particular interests include women's history, textiles, and medical history. She is part of the Saratoga County Historians team presenting programs related to Saratoga County history for the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Saratoga.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the East Greenbush Community Library, a patron-supported non-profit organization.
