Egyptian Spiritual Jazz with Abu Zeyn

Bass, clarinet, and vocal loops weave rhythmic tapestries of original Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual compositions. A portion of proceeds will benefit Palestine and Sudan.

Abu Zeyn (أبو زين) creates rhythmic tapestries by weaving live bass, guitar, clarinet, and vocal loops with soulful improvisation. He is a child of the Nile River and the Arabian Desert. His ears were raised on the sounds of braying donkeys, the call to prayer and tuktuk soundsystems.

In his first show at The Sanctuary, Abu Zeyn will be sharing original hymns inspired by both Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual modalities. Musically, these compositions draw from the wells of Classical Arabic Music and Jazz, both of which are heavily improvisatory.

These compositions are part of a new and evolving body of music that he has performed in NYC and the lower Hudson Valley. This is his first time playing the full set for his local community and likely one of his last performances of the year before he begins the process of recording.
