About

Museum admission; free for members.

Featuring landscapes, portraits, furniture, and decorative arts, Scandinavian Home comprises more than 50 works from the private collection of Pennsylvania-based art collectors David and Susan Werner. The collection includes furniture, ceramics, glass, painting, textiles, sculpture, graphics, and metalwork from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, dating from the 18th through the mid-20th century.

Join collector Dr. David Werner to learn about the historical context of the objects on view and hear his personal reflections. Werner is a retired ophthalmologist and longtime art lover who has collected Scandinavian art for more than 30 years, with an emphasis on decorative and fine art from 1880 to 1920. A resident of State College, Pennsylvania, he serves on the collections committees of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Palmer Museum of Art. He is also a Term Trustee of The Frick Pittsburgh. Previously, he served on the Carnegie Museum of Art board and as president of the Palmer Museum of Art advisory board.

Following Dr. Werner’s talk, walk through the exhibition with curator Patricia Berman, Professor of Art at Wellesley College and co-curator of Scandinavian Home. Her research focuses on turn-of-the-century European art, particularly Scandinavian art, and mid-century modern American art. She has curated exhibitions at venues including the Munch Museum in Oslo and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and has written books on Edvard Munch and James Ensor. Dr. Berman holds a Ph.D. in art history from New York University and previously taught at the University of Oslo.
