Bakithi Kumalo
Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Bakithi Kumalo (Bah-Gee-Tee Koo-Ma-Low) is ranked among the top 50 bass players in the world by Bass Player Magazine. He has toured alongside artists including Hugh Masekela, the Grateful Dead, Sting, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Gloria Estefan, Derek Trucks, and Miriam Makeba. In addition to bass, his solo work includes singing, percussion, piano, and songwriting, drawing on diverse influences from throughout his life.
Born in the Soweto township of Johannesburg, South Africa, Kumalo grew up surrounded by relatives who loved and performed music, as well as traditional African rhythms and a cappella vocal groups. He learned to follow bass lines and developed licks based on the left-hand work of accordion players in township bands. At age seven, he got his first job filling in for his uncle’s bass player. He went on to work as a session musician in South Africa during the 1970s and early 1980s, becoming a top session bassist and accompanying international performers on their South African tours.
Best known for his work on Paul Simon’s Graceland, he has contributed to records by Herbie, Joan Baez, Cyndi Lauper, and even The Lion King. I dare you to call a tune he played on.
