Hailed by John Renbourn as “the best Celtic guitarist in the world,” Tony McManus has also been listed as one of the 50 transcendental guitarists of all time by Guitar Player Magazine. He has extended and transcended the parameters of contemporary Celtic music, drawing on traditions from across the Celtic world. McManus is known for transposing the delicate, complex ornamentation of traditional bagpipe and fiddle tunes—even the phrasing of a Gaelic song—onto the guitar, and for bridging Celtic music with other guitar genres.
He has performed with Alasdair Fraser, Kevin Burke, and Natalie McMaster, among others, at major Celtic festivals such as Celtic Connections. He has also performed with Tommy Emmanuel, Bruce Molsky, and Beppe Gambetta, and appeared at guitar festivals in Nashville, Illinois, Italy, Australia, France, Scotland, England, and Germany. At the “All Star Guitar Night” at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, he performed with Béla Fleck and others, with Les Paul headlining. He has also appeared six times at classical events at the Dundee and Derry Guitar festivals.
