Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective is known for imaginative programs that place beloved chamber works alongside music by composers heard less often. Curated especially for the ensemble’s Hudson debut with Clarion Concerts, this program is bookended by two of Robert Schumann’s most beloved works: the lyrical Adagio and Allegro for horn and piano and the exuberant Piano Quintet in E-flat major.

Between them, Ethel Smyth’s richly textured Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano and Eleanor Alberga’s dream-inspired Shining Gate of Morpheus bring distinctive voices and colors to a program spanning the Romantic tradition to the present day.

About Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective:
Kaleidoscope was dreamed up in 2017 by Tom Poster and Elena Urioste, who met through the BBC New Generation Artists Scheme. The Collective’s flexible roster features many of today’s most inspirational musicians, both instrumentalists and singers, and it is particularly renowned for creative programming, a commitment to celebrating diversity, and a desire to unearth lesser-known gems of the repertoire.

Across Kaleidoscope’s programmes, celebrated chamber works by Mozart, Dvořák and Brahms sit alongside unjustly neglected music by Coleridge-Taylor, Korngold, Pejačević and Price. Recent and forthcoming world premieres include works by Gary Carpenter, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Alex Ho, Robin Holloway, Nicola LeFanu, Sir James MacMillan, Abel Selaocoe and Roderick Williams. Tom Poster’s arrangements for the group have included English folksongs with Allan Clayton, Chinese folksongs with Fleur Barron, and Great American Songbook favourites for various combinations of instruments and voices.

In 2020, Kaleidoscope was appointed Associate Ensemble at Wigmore Hall. The Collective broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3 and has held major residencies at Aldeburgh, Cheltenham, Chipping Campden, Lammermuir and Ischia festivals, and made debuts at the BBC Proms and on tours in the USA and Europe.

Recordings: Kaleidoscope’s debut recording for Chandos Records, American Quintets, received strong reviews and a BBC Music Magazine Award nomination. Subsequent releases include an album of Coleridge-Taylor chamber works (shortlisted for a Gramophone Award), a Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn disc that was included in The Times’ 10 best classical records of 2022, Transfigured (Schoenberg, Alma Mahler, Webern, Zemlinsky), an album of Reynaldo Hahn’s chamber music and songs, and a three-disc series of piano quartets by Brahms and his female contemporaries.

Education and projects: Kaleidoscope has participated in Wigmore Hall’s Learning Festival, directed courses for the Benedetti Foundation, and held a visiting professorship at the Royal Academy of Music. For Schott Music, Kaleidoscope is producing a series of editions of works lacking top-quality performing materials, beginning with Coleridge-Taylor’s Nonet, released in autumn 2025. In 2024, Kaleidoscope was shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society Ensemble Award.
