Albany Center Gallery's Then & Now exhibit series features work by local artists who have shown with us previously and whose careers have made a significant contribution to the local art community. These rare solo exhibitions honor long legacies and highlight these artists' cultural impact.

For more than five decades, Allen Grindle has explored the relationship between intuition, memory, and the recurring images that surface throughout his work. Working across painting, printmaking, sculpture, and relief, Grindle returns to themes of humanity, nature, power, vulnerability, and transformation.

After discovering art while attending college in the late 1960s, Grindle developed a practice rooted in exploration and discovery. Human figures, organic forms, and dreamlike imagery continue to appear throughout his work, often blending abstraction and representation. Rather than creating fixed statements, his work evolves through an intuitive process that invites unexpected connections and new meanings.

Whether through the immediacy of printmaking or the slower, reflective process of painting, Grindle seeks to create work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. Simplified forms and layered imagery create visual tensions that speak to endurance, healing, and the ongoing relationship between people and the world around them.

Then & Now: Moments in Time brings together works from across Grindle's career, revealing both continuity and change and highlighting an artist who has remained committed to experimentation, reflection, and revisiting ideas over time.

The exhibition is made possible by Kevin & Cindi Dubner; William Harris, Esq. & Holly Katz; and New York Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and New York State Legislature.
