Richard Baratta has worn many hats over the decades: master drummer, Grammy nominee, film producer and musician. His latest project takes a nostalgic road through classic rock and soul recordings from the mid-to-late 1960s.
After a 35-year career in film, Baratta returned to his original love, music. He has more than 50 years of experience as a jazz drummer and is a 30-year member of the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America. His film work includes Academy Award-nominated films such as “Donnie Brasco,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “The Irishman” and “Joker.”
Since 2020, Baratta has recorded six projects. “Music in Film” features the Grammy-nominated track “Chopsticks,” with his current working band of Vincent Herring, Bill O’Connell, Paul Bollenback, Michael Goetz and Paul Rossman. “Music in Film: The Sequel” explores more film compositions. “Off the Charts,” featuring John Patitucci, Jerry Bergonzi, David Kikoski and Paul Rossman, looks back at classic jazz B-sides from the 1970s. These three recordings spent many weeks on Jazz Week, a guide to national airplay.
His latest recording, “Looking Back,” was released on Savant Records in February 2025. It features classic rock songs including Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze,” James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” The arrangements by pianist Bill O’Connell bring a funky Latin jazz feel.
On May 22, 2026, Baratta’s latest recording, a fresh and modern approach to Charlie Parker’s music, will be released.
