About
For centuries, the Haudenosaunee practiced body marking, which held an important place in the culture and society of the Northeastern Woodlands. The tradition went dormant by the 1800s due to colonization, along with the teachings, language, and deeper understanding of its purpose for the people.
In recent decades, many Onkwehón:we (Indigenous) peoples around the world have worked to revitalize tattooing. Learn about efforts in Kahnawà:ke over the last ten years to revive, revitalize, and reclaim this ancient tradition.
