About

Spirit of 1776: Lecture on the Role of Jews in the American Revolution
Thursday, December 3, 2026 | 5 PM

The lecture is free with museum admission.

Throughout the Revolution, Jews rallied to support American independence, often with little hope of enjoying the benefits others expected. This talk highlights their contributions as members of the military, civilian advisors, financiers, publicists, privateers, ambassadors, spies, and physicians. It also explores their role in the founding of the new nation and efforts to expand religious freedom and participation in government.

Philadelphia-based living historian Michael Carver, the Regimental Brewmeister, has more than 30 years of home-brewing experience and has portrayed Revolutionary-era life for more than 15 years. Drawing on his background as a chemist, brewer, and reenactor, he brings the crafts, technologies, and everyday experiences of eighteenth-century America to life through hands-on programs.

The Spirit of 1776 program series complements the Albany Institute’s exhibition Albany, c. 1776.
