Access and Insight: Wallace Craig and the song of the Wood Pewee

Tue, Oct 27 · 6:00 PM

Location

222 Madison Avenue · Albany, NY

About

For many beginning birders, the eastern wood pewee is one of the easiest calls to identify. Historian Kristoffer Whitney will explain how the pewee’s recognizable call helped Wallace Craig, a now little-known scientist who studied the eastern wood pewee from the 1920s to the early 1940s. When Craig’s hearing faded, he turned to birders and other amateur ornithologists to help him continue his research.

Come hear more about the history of the eastern wood pewee, the scientists who study them, and how accessibility and collaboration matter in scientific pursuits. This event features live, in-person ASL interpretation to ensure a welcoming experience for all attendees.

Sponsored by the New York State Museum, in partnership with the University at Albany’s Department of History, the University at Albany Center for Arts, Humanities, and Technosciences, and RPI’s Department of Science and Technology Studies.
