Following the Footsteps of the Masters: Demonstrating the Techniques of the Hudson River School by Artist Lauren Sansaricq (rescheduled date)

October 11, 2026, 2:00–3:30 p.m.
Free with museum admission.

Artist Lauren Sansaricq will demonstrate and explain the painting practices of nineteenth-century Hudson River School painters. She will discuss their process, from sketching outdoors to creating epic, large paintings in the studio, as well as the school’s unique compositional and philosophical ideas.

Sansaricq has spent more than 20 years studying Hudson River School techniques and has taught at several prestigious institutions. The program is open to anyone interested in the Hudson River School, not only artists and craftspeople. It invites open dialogue and questions along the way.

Program support is provided by Donald and Ann Eberle. Additional support is provided by Jennifer Krieger and Eric Siegel.

Lauren Sansaricq grew up in Columbia County, New York, where she was exposed from an early age to the beauty of the Hudson Valley and, under the teaching of Thomas Locker, to traditional Hudson River School painting techniques. Following Locker’s advice, she received academic training in drawing and painting at the Grand Central Academy of Art in New York City. At 21, she was represented by Hawthorne Fine Art, a New York gallery specializing in nineteenth-century Hudson River School painting, and had a solo show there that same year.

Her work has been exhibited at Manhattan venues including the Salmagundi Club, the National Arts Club, and the Union League Club. In 2012, she had a solo show at Saint Anselm College and showed work at the Boston International Fine Arts Show. One of her paintings was featured in The New York Times in connection with “The Great Hudson River Exhibition” in upstate New York.

Sansaricq’s work is in collections throughout the country. She teaches each summer on the Hudson River Fellowship and lives in the Catskill Mountains.
