Nearly one-third of all engagements fought during the American Revolution took place in what is today New York State. From the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775 and the Battle of Oriskany in 1777 to the Battle of Newtown and the Sullivan Campaign in 1779, key events across New York helped shape the outcome of the Revolutionary War. Geography made control of the Hudson River critical to both sides. In 1776, the British captured New York City at the mouth of the Hudson and used it as their stronghold for the rest of the war. The American victory at Saratoga in 1777, further up the Hudson, was a turning point in the conflict.
