The Deadbeats have been playing since 1992, following in the footsteps of the Grateful Dead. They put their own spin on the music, setting them apart from the average Dead cover band. Based in New York’s Hudson Valley, they’ve played thousands of shows along the East Coast, from Maine to Key West. Denise Parent and Mike Johnson have been with the band since it got started in the early ’90s.
Over the years, they’ve added longtime friends and fellow musicians Brian Mangini and Tom Pirozzi, both from Ominous Seapods and Raisinhead, along with Ted Grey, also from Raisinhead. The jams are ever-evolving, and fans notice!
The band won the Listen Up Hero Award in 2026 and the Listen Up Award for Favorite Grateful Dead Band in New York’s Capital Region in 2022. They ranked among the top four favorite bands in the Hudson Valley’s Chronogrammies in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Saratoga Living Magazine ranked them among the top five local tribute acts of 2019. They were voted Best Jam Band in the Capital Region in 2017 and took second place for Best Cover Band and Best Tribute Band.
After more than 30 years, the band is still playing music by the Grateful Dead, JGB, Phish, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Band, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, and others. They also play original songs that have become popular with their fans. Their Grateful Dead-inspired shows are a celebration of improvisational, jamming rock and roll.
The Deadbeats have built a large, loyal following who appreciate the open-ended, participatory nature of their performances. They craft shows around songs requested by fans. Every set is created in the moment, with the help of their fans and without a set list. They’ve never played the same set twice and are always adding songs to their catalog.
