Join photographer Phyllis Galembo for an artist talk about her decades-long practice documenting ceremonial dress and masquerade traditions in communities throughout Africa and the Americas. Galembo will discuss the travels, encounters, and process behind Mexico Masks / Rituals, offering insight into the people, traditions, and artistry represented in the exhibition.
After the talk, Mexico Masks / Rituals will be available for purchase and signing.
Phyllis Galembo is an American photographer known for her six photographic monographs on ritual dress and masquerade in Africa, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Her photographs have been exhibited at institutions including the International Center of Photography, the Smithsonian Institution, and the American Museum of Natural History, and are held in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She was a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow and is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art and Art History at the University at Albany, State University of New York.
